Gender Mainstreaming in the EU: Incorporating a Feminist Reading?Petra Meier & Emanuela Lombardo - 2006 - European Journal of Women's Studies 13 (2):151-166.
This article explores the extent to which a feminist reading of gender mainstreaming is incorporated in the EU political discourse by analysing how family policy and gender inequality in politics are framed in EU policy documents. Gender mainstreaming is treated as an open signifier that can be filled with both feminist and non-feminist content. The article provides a set of criteria to assess whether a feminist reading of gender mainstreaming has been adopted. The frame analysis of EU documents on family (...)

Discursive Dynamics in Gender Equality Politics: What about ‘Feminist Taboos’?Mieke Verloo, Petra Meier & Emanuela Lombardo - 2010 - European Journal of Women's Studies 17 (2):105-123.
Discursive dynamics play an important role in shaping the meanings of gender equality. The article discusses the relation between hegemonic discourses on gender equality policies and feminist taboos. It suggests that feminist scholars could paradoxically be trapped in hegemonic discourses on gender equality policies that may lead to taboos about particular approaches to and interpretations of such policies. Three main feminist hegemonic discourses are considered to act as taboos. They deal with the possibility to overcome patriarchy, the role of elites (...)

De kracht van de definitie: een vergelijking van quotawetten in Argentinië, België en Frankrijk.Petra Meier - 2004 - Res Publica 46 (1):80-100.
Gender quota do not always go hand in hand with a considerable rise in the number of women elected. Although the number of fe/male representatives elected depends on several factors, we argue that the stipulations of gender quota acts influence to a large extent their impact on the sex ratios in politics. This is not so much due to the share of fe/male candidates parties have to present than to the extent to which a gender quota act anticipates the particularities (...)

On the theoretical acknowledgement of diversity in representation.Petra Meier - 2001 - Res Publica 43 (4):551-570.
This article provides a state of the art of the growing normative plea for enhanced representativeness, by which we understand a form of representation considering the sociodemographic particularities of society. We look at the Anglo-American plea for group representation and the French debate on parity democracy. Concerned with the structural marginalisation of large numbers of citizens from the political arena, these scholars criticise the abstract concept ofcitizenship and the interpretation of the process of representation as such. The plea for enhanced (...)
